Letter from the president

The 30th annual SWAFS conference in Little Rock, Arkansas exemplified the excellence in education and communication that our organization was founded. The teamwork of the Little Rock committee, under the leadership of Nick Dawson, was evident in every respect and I would like to thank them on behalf of all SWAFS members for their dedication to the advancement of quality in forensic science. If you were unable to attend this year’s conference please know, classes were offered in several disciplines and the information is available to you through many avenues.

SWAFS reached another milestone this year with the presentation of the first annual Floyd E. McDonald Scholarship to Adrienne Martinez, a junior at University of Central Oklahoma. Adrienne is an exceptional student and I foresee many more great accomplishments from this young woman. Her perseverance at overcoming challenges and dedication to her education is unsurpassed by any young person I’ve ever met. I am proud to know her.

Getting the scholarship program off the ground has been a personal goal for many years and I am happy to announce the $1000.00 scholarship will be awarded every year as funds allow. At this years conference we accepted $330.00 in donations towards the scholarship fund. As most of us remember, finding funds for college can be difficult. I encourage you to help SWAFS cultivate new scientists through a donation and prompting that special student you know to apply for this prestigious award.  Scholarship

Our board shifted again, as it does every year and I would like to recognize those leaving the board for their service to our association; Nick Dawson, Chairman of the Board; Debbie Stephens, secretary; Tracey Thompson and Steve Valdez, board members. I would like to believe that you would each take a break, but I’m aware you will not. Nick has agreed to take on the task of Scholarship Committee Chair. (Thanks Nick) I hear rumors about the others. I’m sure they all would encourage you to serve on the board and/or on a committee. I’m also sure they want you to know; the only requirement for serving is the desire to improve our association. We wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for those with that vision that came before us.

SWAFS is your association and your voice to the currently fascinated public. Every one of us has an opinion on how to improve upon just about everything. Don’t let your ideas whither away, make suggestions (anonymous if you like) to meeting hosts, the journal and newsletter editors or me. Broaden your talents and your curriculum vitae by teaching a workshop, hosting a meeting and/or writing a paper for one of our publications.

I also want us to remember our members, their families and co-workers that are affected by the recent hurricanes with positive energy and strength for rebuilding.

Looking to the future…next year we will participate in a joint conference with The MidAtlantic Association of Forensic Scientists, The Southern Association of Forensic Scientists and The MidWestern Association of Forensic Scientists in Orlando, Florida. I hope you will join us October 18-23, 2009 for what promises to be a week overflowing with classes and workshops in every discipline of the forensic sciences. This joint meeting will be held at the Wyndham Orlando Resort for the unbelievable rate of $99.00 a night. And….at this year’s business meeting the membership at large approved the proposal by the DEA South Central Lab to host the 2010 meeting in the Dallas area.

The SWAFS Journal and Newsletter are awaiting your input about interesting cases, extraction techniques or compilations of research data to share with fellow SWAFS members.

I am privileged to serve as your president this year.

Thank you,

D Michelle O’Neal
